Proud to be a Unesco Biosphere Partner

At The Welbeck Hotel & Restaurant, I want to share with you how proud we are to be a UNESCO Biosphere Partner. This means we are committed to preserving and enhancing the beautiful natural environment of the Isle of Man.

We are actively involved in sustainable practices and supporting our local community. During your stay, you'll notice our efforts to conserve resources and promote the rich biodiversity and unique cultural heritage of this wonderful region. We're dedicated to providing you with a delightful experience while ensuring that we protect this special place for future generations to enjoy.

We practice Sustainability...

  • We make sure to recycle used paper, single use plastics, tin cans, glass containers, juice cartons, milk cartons which all go to our local amenity site to be disposed of responsibly. How can you help us do this? Leave any of the above separate to the rubbish bin in your room- our housekeeping team will put into our buckets and dispose of non-recyclables.

  • Towels - unless your towels have been placed into the bath to change, we fold them to be re-used.

  • Switching from small plastic bodywash/shampoo bottles to eco-friendly dispensers in our bathrooms.

  • Our water on the Isle of Man is premium! We no longer supply bottled water, however drinking from the taps is perfectly fine in normal circumstances. We do, however, sell reusable water bottles in our gift cabinet.

  • Lights off! We encourage guests to switch off electrical items when not in use.

  • We've switched from small plastic containers of Flora, Jams & Marmalade on our cold buffet to glass containers from industrial tubs.

  • Our breakfasts are cooked to order- no heat lamps here! We only use what we need, and it's fresh.

  • Our windows are double glazed to keep in the warmth and maintained by a local company

    • Energy Efficiency: Double glazing improves insulation in buildings, reducing the need for heating and cooling. This leads to lower energy consumption and, consequently, a reduction in carbon emissions.

    • Reduced Heat Loss: By trapping air between two panes of glass, double glazing minimises heat loss during cooler months and keeps the interior cooler in summer, maintaining a stable indoor temperature.

We use locally sourced produce: We use Manx ingredients where possible. Local eggs, meat and vegetables from Manx farmers, bread delivered by local bakery, local honey (also sold in our gift cabinet), drinks made on the island such as Fynoderee gin, Bushy's Ale, Okell's beer etc.). Our filter coffee and tea bags are also Manx bought!

Manx milk from grass-fed cows:

  • Reduce Carbon Footprint: Grass-fed cows emit less methane compared to grain-fed cows. This is because their natural diet is easier for them to digest, resulting in lower greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Improved Soil Health: Grazing on grassland can improve soil health by enhancing nutrient cycling and increasing soil organic carbon content, which helps sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

  • Biodiversity: Grass-fed farming supports a more diverse ecosystem by maintaining pasturelands that provide habitats for various plant and animal species.

  • Water Conservation: Grass-fed cows usually require less water compared to feedlot operations. Grasslands naturally retain water and support better watershed management.

  • Reduced Chemical Use: This practice often involves fewer chemicals such as fertilisers, pesticides, and antibiotics, making it a more sustainable option. Overall, grass-fed farming aligns with sustainable agriculture practices, which aim to minimise the environmental impact and promote ecological balance.

Taking part in Biodiversity Initiatives... Irene & Michael often partake in "Beach Buddies Isle of Man" now a globally recognised charity. We also have our own "Beach Buddies" bin, which is located on the promenade, ready to take any litter found.
