Our History

The Welbeck Hotel is a family run business, operated by the George family since 1978. There have been various changes and expansions throughout the years, as shown in the photos below.

The Welbeck Hotel is a family-run establishment operated by the George family since 1978. Originally built by Alexander Gill, a prominent builder, in the late 19th century, the hotel has undergone various changes and expansions over the years. It started as one of three hotels known as The Welbeck, The Rosebery, and The Glenville Hotels.

The George family acquired the hotel after moving from Fleetwood due to their love for the Isle of Man. The business has remained in the family since then, managed by Irene and Michael George after taking over from Michael's parents. Irene & Michael's daughter, Lucy (one of 4 children) is now 'Front of House Manager' but looks after the overall running of the hotel closely with her parents.

The hotel has 30 en-suite rooms today and 7 self-catering holiday let apartments, having expanded over time, including the acquisition and conversion of adjacent properties like The Bella Casa Hotel and The Granada Apartments. These additions reflect the family's commitment to growing their hospitality business while maintaining personal family traditions.

A unique aspect of the Welbeck's history includes its year-round operation transition, which allowed the hotel to cater to both tourists and business travelers. This change helped the hotel thrive amid shifting tourism trends on the island. The hotel also proudly involves various family members in its operations, ensuring a personal touch in its hospitality. Currently, the Welbeck Hotel carries on its legacy of excellent guest service, blending historical charm with modern comforts, and continues to create lasting memories for its guests.
