In our bid to reduce plastics as an Eco Biosphere Partner, we were forced to get rid of our small bottles of hair and body gel last year.
Many people bring their own, but for those travelling light, we have implemented an eco-friendly option after consulting our friends at Gellings Hygiene & Catering.
You will find these dispensers in all of our bathrooms.
We had our first charity fundraiser on Saturday 2nd March, celebrating the 200th year of the fantastic Lifeboats organisation, of which it’s founder Sir William Hillary called the Isle of Man home. Although he was not Manx born, he was a proud Douglas resident who bore witness to too many shipwrecks in British waters. It was Sir William who sought Royal Assent for the cause, and in 1824, officiated the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. I am extremely proud to say that we raised a total of £1,114.oo for this fantastic cause. For many demands to do another next year, we may just have to as it was a successful sell-out.
Mark Falconer was kind enough to take photographs for us (see below).
The fantastic Shenanigans Banned who performed an excellent set, everyone singing along and created a wonderful atmosphere; and Rosalie, the Purple Haired Magician, left everyone in amazement with her fantastic table magic.
Thanks to all who brought raffle prizes with them, and the following businesses who were kind enough to donate prizes:
Isle of Man Post Office – for also providing the decorative post stamps around the hotel, MotaWorld, Aces Bouncy Castles, Manx Loaghtan Produce, The Fynoderee Distillery.
Thanks also to Clare Barber – MHK for Douglas East who took care of reading out the raffle winners!
Each table was named:

We released our ‘Events Calendar’ to Facebook for the first 3 months, re-opening on 15th January this year. It has to be said, 2023 was tough on us and therefore didn’t get to update you as much as we would have hoped.
I’m pleased to say, we have been extremely successful thus far in 2024.
Kicking off with our Manx Produce Night on 20th January with a 7-course tasting menu of all things Manx (where possible)- which, even though was ill-timed before payday, we still had a substantial amount of guests attend.
Followed closely by the ever-popular ‘Burns Night’ in honour of Robert Burns, which saw the return of John Struthers entertaining us with the majestic bagpipes, toasting our homemade Loaghtan haggis, amongst amusing speeches.
February was full of love, and saw two hugely successful Valentines evenings brimming with cocktails and beautifully prepared food by our kitchen team.

A big thank you to Sam of ‘SM Creative Photography’ who has captured some of the beautiful meals made by our fabulous kitchen staff. Sam was more than happy, with her partner Faye, to taste test as many of the dishes as she could on each of her visits.

We are delighted to say that we are off to a fantastic start in 2024! After a challenging year in 2023, we barely provided any updates as we simply didn’t have the time.
My favourite event we’ve had this year just has to be the wonderful 4th Onchan Brownies visit to the Welbeck. I was contacted by their leader, Caroline, who suggested that her inquisitive group of 7-10 year olds may want to come along and find out what it is to run a hotel. FINALLY- STAFF! (Ha ha… joking)
It was a truly enjoyable evening which saw a group of twenty, split in to two smaller groups of ten, take part in a competition of who can put a pillow case on a pillow fastest and making mocktails with our resident cocktail connoisseur, Nico.
After a busy hour or so, they sat down to have a bite to eat in our Conservatory Restaurant, and were delightful in the Q&A session which took place after they had finished their ice cream. Michael kicked off with a question for them first, of “What is the most important thing a guest sees as they walk through the door of your hotel?”… it was a tough one, but the answer was of course, “a smile”!
My parents and I have never been given the opportunity to welcome younger groups such as Girl Guides in before, but it was truly a pleasure; they were all very polite and sweet. I made sure the girls went home to tell their parents they wanted to come for a staycation at the Welbeck 😉
We look forward to welcoming you to the Welbeck, and hope you can join us for our 46th year of success.
With best wishes,
Lucy, Irene, Michael & the Welbeck team.
