In our bid to reduce plastics as an Eco Biosphere Partner, we were forced to get rid of our small bottles of hair and body gel last year.
Many people bring their own, but for those travelling light, we have implemented an eco-friendly option after consulting our friends at Gellings Hygiene & Catering.
You will find these dispensers in all of our bathrooms.
We are delighted to say that we are off to a fantastic start in 2024! After a challenging year in 2023, we barely provided any updates as we simply didn’t have the time.
My favourite event we’ve had this year just has to be the wonderful 4th Onchan Brownies visit to the Welbeck. I was contacted by their leader, Caroline, who suggested that her inquisitive group of 7-10 year olds may want to come along and find out what it is to run a hotel. FINALLY- STAFF! (Ha ha… joking)
It was a truly enjoyable evening which saw a group of twenty, split in to two smaller groups of ten, take part in a competition of who can put a pillow case on a pillow fastest and making mocktails with our resident cocktail connoisseur, Nico.
After a busy hour or so, they sat down to have a bite to eat in our Conservatory Restaurant, and were delightful in the Q&A session which took place after they had finished their ice cream. Michael kicked off with a question for them first, of “What is the most important thing a guest sees as they walk through the door of your hotel?”… it was a tough one, but the answer was of course, “a smile”!
My parents and I have never been given the opportunity to welcome younger groups such as Girl Guides in before, but it was truly a pleasure; they were all very polite and sweet. I made sure the girls went home to tell their parents they wanted to come for a staycation at the Welbeck 😉
We look forward to welcoming you to the Welbeck, and hope you can join us for our 46th year of success.
Whether you’re in Douglas for a ‘staycation’, a family event, or a trip to the theatre- and you don’t want to pay the taxi fare back home… the Welbeck is welcoming you to stay in comfort and style.

As UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man partners, we have been looking at ways of limiting how much plastic we use and re-using and recycling wherever practical.
Although we have for many years taken our bottles, cans, paper, cardboard (and now plastic free milk cartons,) we now have labelled receptacles placed outside for our like minded guests to assist us reduce our impact on the planet.
We are going to stop providing the three in one shampoo/conditioner/body wash in the rooms, though we will of course keep a supply behind Reception for any emergencies. Other changes we will make include not using individual portions for preserves and honey.
Isle of Man tap water is one of the best in the world (Water Quality Report) and comes ready chilled, so we will cease to put bottles in the fridges.
There are other items for which we have yet to come up with a solution, such as the little milk pots and wrapped biscuits in the rooms but we will supply fresh milk if guests come down for it. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to do anything that may include extra labour, as staff are so difficult to come by these days but if you have any ideas to help us, please let us know.

It might be fair to say that you cannot guarantee warm sunny days on the Isle of Man at this time of year. Indeed, you can’t guarantee warm, sunny weather at any time of year in the Isle of Man!
However, it is quite unusual to have whole days of absolutely teeming rain and even on the worst of them, you can still extract something despite a little dampness and a bit of a hooly.
Actually that’s what we had to do recently when our daughter and her family visited for half term. we picked the time when it was least likely to be most wet and headed off to Glen Helen, 9 miles along the TT course on the west of the Island.
The intention was to visit Spooyt Vane, arguably the biggest waterfall here, which is situated just beyond the glen on private land, so we set off inland, up river. And here’s the thing: Although it is a beatiful shady spot to visit in the summer, it’s just as beautiful but much more spectacular, especially after heavy rainfall in the winter and, as on many of our walks, you can see so much more without all the leaves on the trees.
The main path to the Rhenass fall (13 years, a tourist and 43 years living here and I have only discovered the name) is wide, with no major inclines or descents, so it is one of our more accessible glens and we had no trouble with the pram or any of our other two grandchildren, despite them starting to show the effects of a hard few days of holiday and there was certainly plenty of flow to the river, rapids and lots of contributary waterfalls.
What I had forgotten, is that there was no way that we could get the pram beyond the bridge, so Spooyt Vane will have to wait until their visit next year when the youngest is a little bit bigger.
There is also a little play park, near to the entrance of the glen which is always a great sweetener for the kids to have to do a walk!
The Swiss Chalet is being refurbished after a fire and the cafe by the yurts was closed but we could have gone to Tynwald Mills nearby and we ended up going to the Hawthorn which serves food all day but you can also pop in for a coffee or a drink.
A little while later and into November, following more rainfall, on one of our beautiful autumnal days, I took this photograph of another waterfall on the Calf of Man.
You don’t need to leave the Isle of Man until the summer because there’s no such thing as bad weather, only weather in all its differing forms. And even if, sometimes you don’t fancy going out in it, it doesn’t rain in the Welbeck Bar!
